Your truck just left the depot at 2 AM. There is no authorised trip tonight. The driver's phone is switched off. You open the GPS app and see the vehicle heading towards an unknown location 80 kilometres away.

What do you do next?

If your GPS tracker is wired with a remote engine immobiliser, you tap one button. The vehicle will not be able to restart the next time the engine is switched off. The driver — or thief — is grounded.

This guide explains exactly how the remote engine immobiliser works, how to trigger it safely, and the five specific situations where it is the right tool to use.

💡

Already have a GPS tracker? You may already have this feature.

If your Alphatech GPS tracker was installed with the optional relay wire (the white DOUT wire), remote engine immobilisation is already available on your account — no extra hardware, no extra cost. Check your Alphatrack or Trakzee app under "Commands" or "Relay Control."

What Is a Remote Engine Immobiliser?

A remote engine immobiliser is a feature built into your GPS tracker that lets you prevent a vehicle's engine from restarting — from your phone, from anywhere in the world, instantly.

It is not a separate device. It is not an alarm. It does not physically lock the steering wheel. It works through the GPS tracker's built-in digital output (relay) — a small electronic switch wired into the vehicle's ignition or fuel circuit that you control remotely.

When you send the immobilise command:

  • The GPS tracker activates its internal relay
  • The relay cuts the ignition or fuel pump circuit
  • The vehicle will not restart after the next engine off
  • The vehicle continues running if it is already in motion — for safety

"A remote immobiliser does not stop a moving vehicle. It stops a vehicle from being moved again. That distinction is the most important thing to understand about this feature."

How It Works — The Technical Truth (Simply Explained)

⚡ The full chain — from your phone tap to the engine refusing to start

1

You tap "Immobilise" in the GPS app

The command travels from your phone to the GPS platform's server over the internet — same as sending a WhatsApp message.

2

Server sends a command packet to the GPS tracker via 4G

The server transmits a short data command to the SIM card inside your vehicle's GPS tracker. This reaches the device within 5–15 seconds in good network conditions.

3

GPS tracker activates its internal relay (DOUT)

Inside the tracker, a small electronic relay — the Digital Output (DOUT) — switches state. Think of it as a tiny remote-controlled switch that is now in the "open/cut" position.

4

Relay interrupts the ignition or fuel pump circuit

The relay wire is connected in series with the vehicle's ignition signal wire or fuel pump circuit. When the relay opens, this circuit is broken — the same as unplugging a cable.

5

Engine will not start on next attempt

If the engine is currently running — it keeps running (safe). When the engine is switched off next, the broken circuit prevents it from starting again. The vehicle is now effectively immobilised.

6

You send "Release" when done — engine restarts normally

When the situation is resolved — vehicle recovered, driver explained — you tap "Release" in the app. The relay closes, the circuit is restored, and the vehicle starts normally.

How to Trigger It from Your Phone in 3 Steps

1

Open your GPS app and select the vehicle

In Alphatrack, Trakzee, or Flitrack — tap on the vehicle you want to immobilise on the live map. Open its detail panel.

2

Go to Commands → Relay / Immobilise

Look for "Commands," "Control," or "Relay" in the vehicle options menu. Tap "Immobilise" or "Relay ON." The platform may ask for a confirmation tap — do it.

3

Wait for the confirmation — typically 5–30 seconds

The app shows a confirmation once the GPS device acknowledges the command. You will also see the relay status change in the vehicle's data panel. The vehicle is now immobilised.

⚠

Always check the vehicle is stopped before immobilising

Before tapping Immobilise, look at the live map and confirm the vehicle's current speed is 0 km/h. Most GPS platforms will also warn you if the vehicle is moving — do not override this warning. Wait until the vehicle is parked, then immobilise. This is both a safety practice and a legal one.

Where It Connects in the Vehicle

The remote immobiliser function uses the GPS tracker's Digital Output (DOUT) — a relay wire that comes pre-wired in most Alphatech installations. Here is how it is connected:

⚡ Immobiliser Relay Wiring — Standard Installation

Red wire (+) Vehicle battery positive (10–30V DC power for the GPS tracker)

Black wire (GND) Vehicle chassis ground

Yellow wire (DIN 1) Ignition sense input — detects engine on/off status

White wire (DOUT 1) Immobiliser relay output — wired in series with ignition signal or fuel pump. When activated, breaks this circuit.

The white DOUT wire is the immobiliser wire. It is connected in series — meaning cutting it (via the relay) interrupts the circuit it controls. Our installers connect this to the ignition signal wire by default, which is the safest implementation.

🔌

Ignition circuit vs fuel pump circuit — which is better?

Ignition signal wire (recommended): Prevents the engine from cranking on the next start attempt. Clean, safe, and easily reversible.
Fuel pump circuit: Cuts fuel supply — engine dies when fuel runs out. Less predictable timing, not recommended for safety reasons. Most professional installers use the ignition signal method.

5 Situations Where You Should Use It

🚪

Vehicle Theft in Progress

Your GPS shows a vehicle moving at night from your yard with no authorised driver. Track it to its next stop, confirm it has stopped, then immobilise. Share live location with police while the vehicle cannot move. This is the most important use case.

🔳

Unauthorised After-Hours Use

A driver has taken a company vehicle for personal use after working hours. Geofence alert notified you. The vehicle has stopped at an unknown location. Immobilise it, then call the driver to explain — they cannot drive away before the conversation happens.

💰

Vehicle Finance EMI Default

Finance companies and leasing operators use remote immobilisation to recover vehicles when an EMI payment is missed and the borrower is unresponsive. Vehicle is located, confirmed stopped in a safe public location, immobilised, and recovery team dispatched.

👤

Driver Termination or Dispute

A driver has left the company on bad terms and still has a company vehicle. You know where it is, it is parked — immobilise it immediately to prevent the vehicle being driven to an unknown location before your recovery team arrives.

🚗

Teen Driver or Unauthorised Person

Someone — a family member, unauthorised person, household staff — has taken your vehicle without permission. The vehicle is now stopped. Immobilise it until the situation is resolved without it being driven further away.

When You Must Never Use It

🚫

Critical Safety Rules — Read These Before Using the Feature

🚪

NEVER immobilise a moving vehicle

If your GPS shows the vehicle is travelling above 0 km/h — do not send the command. An engine that unexpectedly loses power on a highway can cause a crash, injure occupants, and create serious legal liability for you. Always wait for the vehicle to stop completely.

🚛

NEVER immobilise in a tunnel, on a bridge, or in traffic

Even if the vehicle appears slow on the GPS (due to update interval), never use the feature if the vehicle's last known location was inside a tunnel, on a flyover, or in dense traffic. Wait for a confirmed stationary position in a safe open area.

🚑

NEVER use it as a disciplinary tool in the moment

Do not immobilise a vehicle because you are angry at a driver who is late or took a wrong turn. This feature is for security emergencies — vehicle theft, unauthorised use, non-payment recovery. Using it inappropriately creates legal and HR liability.

⚕

NEVER use on an ambulance, school bus, or emergency vehicle while occupied

For vehicles carrying passengers — school buses, ambulances, taxis with passengers — immobilisation during an occupied trip is never acceptable regardless of the circumstances. Wait until the vehicle is empty and stationary.

The honest verdict

A car alarm makes noise. A GPS tracker with remote immobiliser catches the vehicle, tracks it, and stops it — silently, remotely, with timestamped evidence. For actual anti-theft protection, they are not comparable. The GPS wins decisively.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a remote engine immobiliser in GPS tracking?

A remote engine immobiliser is a feature built into wired GPS trackers that lets you prevent a vehicle's engine from restarting — from your phone, anywhere in the world. The GPS tracker has a relay wire (DOUT) connected in series with the vehicle's ignition circuit. When you tap Immobilise in your GPS app, the tracker opens this relay, breaking the ignition circuit. The vehicle continues running if it is already in motion, but cannot restart once the engine is switched off.

Is it legal to remotely immobilise a vehicle in India?

Remote immobilisation of your own vehicle — or a vehicle your company owns — is legal in India when used responsibly. Vehicle finance companies use it under the loan agreement terms. Fleet operators use it for their own fleet vehicles under employment or contractor agreements. Using it on a vehicle you do not own, or using it to endanger someone (such as immobilising a moving vehicle), would be illegal. Always consult a legal advisor for specific situations involving third-party vehicles or disputed ownership.

Will the remote immobiliser stop the engine while the vehicle is moving?

No — and this is intentional. The remote immobiliser prevents the engine from restarting after the next stop. It does not cut the engine while the vehicle is in motion. Most GPS platforms also display a warning and require confirmation if the vehicle appears to be moving when you tap Immobilise. This design is a deliberate safety measure. Never attempt to override this safety check.

Does the remote immobiliser work if the GPS tracker's SIM has no signal?

The immobilise command travels from your phone to the GPS tracker via the mobile network. If the tracker is in an area with no 4G/GSM signal — a remote area, underground parking, or a signal-blocked location — the command cannot be delivered until the vehicle returns to coverage. Once the vehicle moves into network range, any pending commands are delivered. This is why GPS trackers with offline data storage are valuable — they record the vehicle's movements during the network gap.

Can a thief bypass the remote immobiliser?

An experienced auto electrician could theoretically bypass the relay wire — but only if they know the GPS tracker is installed and exactly where the relay wire is connected. A hidden professional installation makes this significantly difficult. Unlike a car alarm (which is visible and trivially bypassed), a hidden GPS tracker with a relay connection is not something a typical thief will find or know how to bypass. For maximum security, ensure your GPS tracker is installed in a hidden location by a professional technician.

How much does GPS with remote immobiliser cost in India?

Alphatech's wired GPS trackers with remote engine immobilisation start at ₹1,199 + GST, including the relay wire installation, 1-year platform subscription, and doorstep installation at your vehicle's location. There is no extra charge for the remote immobiliser feature — it is included with the wired installation. An M2M SIM card with a data plan is required for the command to reach the device (standard in our installations).
