What is an OBD / plug-and-play GPS tracker?

An OBD tracker plugs directly into a car's OBD-II diagnostic port — the same port a mechanic uses — and draws power and vehicle data from it. It needs no wiring or installer, so it's the fastest tracker to fit and remove, but it's also the easiest for someone to unplug.

What is a wired (hardwired) GPS tracker?

A wired tracker is connected directly to the vehicle's battery or ignition wiring, usually hidden behind the dashboard. It's more work to install but far harder to spot or remove, which is why it's the standard choice for fleet and commercial vehicles.

What is a magnetic GPS tracker, and is it legal to use?

A magnetic tracker is a self-contained, battery-powered unit that attaches to any metal part of a vehicle with no wiring at all — useful for temporary tracking, rentals, or assets that move between vehicles. It's completely legal to put one on a vehicle you own.

Know this before you buy: installing a tracker on a vehicle you don't own, without the owner's knowledge, is a criminal offence in India under IPC stalking provisions and the IT Act — regardless of the reason. Only use one on your own vehicle, a company vehicle with employee consent, or with the owner's explicit permission.

How does a fuel sensor work with a GPS tracker?

A fuel sensor (capacitive, ultrasonic, or float-type) sits inside or on the tank and measures fuel level continuously. That reading is sent through the same GPS tracker and SIM connection as the location data, so a sudden fuel drop shows up alongside exactly where and when it happened.

What makes an AIS-140 tracker different from a regular one?

An AIS-140 device follows the same core GPS-plus-SIM mechanism, but adds a hard-wired panic button, a minimum 4-hour battery backup, tamper detection, and dual-IP transmission — meaning it sends data to your fleet dashboard and to a government transport server at the same time, which is what makes it valid for RTO compliance.

Why do GPS trackers need a SIM card?

The satellite signal only tells the device where it is — it has no way to tell you. The device needs a mobile data connection to send that location somewhere, which is what the SIM does. Most trackers use an embedded M2M (machine-to-machine) SIM, pre-configured by the vendor, rather than a personal phone SIM.

How is a navigation GPS (like Garmin) different from a vehicle tracker?

Most consumer navigation devices aren't designed to broadcast the vehicle's live location to someone else's phone or a fleet dashboard — that remote-visibility job is what a dedicated GPS tracker is built for. They solve two different problems, not the same one.

Do all GPS trackers need a SIM card?

Almost all real-time trackers do, since the SIM is what sends the location to your app. A few basic data-logger devices work without one, but they only store a route for later download rather than showing live location.

Is a magnetic GPS tracker as accurate as a wired one?

Positioning accuracy is the same, since both use the same GPS/NavIC chip. The difference is battery life and durability, not accuracy — a magnetic unit runs on its internal battery, while a wired one gets constant power from the vehicle.

Can I add a fuel sensor to my existing GPS tracker?

Usually yes, as long as the tracker model supports an external sensor input. It's best confirmed with your installer before buying a sensor separately.

Is a Garmin device the same as a vehicle tracker?

No. A Garmin-style device is built for on-board navigation for the driver. It typically isn't built to send the vehicle's location to a separate app or dashboard for someone else to monitor remotely, which is the core job of a GPS tracker.

Do GPS trackers work in areas with no mobile network?

The GPS positioning itself still works without network coverage, but the device can't transmit that location until it reconnects. Most trackers store recent points in memory and send them all at once once signal returns.
